What Is Acrylic Fabric | Types, Uses, and Care, You should know!

In the 1940s, American DuPont Corporation developed acrylic fibers. But it has only gained much attention since the 1950s. What is acrylic fabric made of? As a man-made material, it is a synthetic polymer fabric.

This fabric is usually found in clothing such as sweatshirts, sweaters, athletic wear, and boot liners. Because of its ability to retain heat. It’s also used for outdoor upholstery fabric.

What Is Acrylic Fabric

As a synthetic fabric, acrylic does not come from natural sources. Instead, it is made from a synthetic polymer known as acrylonitrile. Which are derived from petroleum or coal-based chemicals.

Then goes through some processes and is spun into yarn. This yarn then is woven or knitted to become acrylic fabric. This acrylic fiber contains at least 85% acrylonitrile and other synthetic compounds.

Acrylic fabric is a textile that is the least breathable but is capable to retain heat. Usually used in athletic equipment and clothing. Even though there are concerns about carcinogenic in acrylic material.

Types of Acrylic Fabric

What is acrylic fabric type available today? There are wide varieties of acrylic fabric. The difference comes from the compound used in the production process. The four main types are as follows:

1. Acrylic

This type is considered the normal acrylic fabric. Because it contains at least 85% pure acrylonitrile. So it is highly flammable.

2. Modacrylic

This type is composed of acrylonitrile and other polymers. Such as vinylidene chloride. It’s flame-resistant, durable, have better drapability. It may also resist abrasion and pilling.
