Many people are more familiar with the term ‘meter’ than ‘yard’. So, to know how much fabrics in a yard and turn it into meters in the calculation, simply divide it by 1.094.
Let’s take an example of 2 yards. Divide that with 1.094 = 1.828 meters. But in buying a fabric, the seller will not give you that exact number. So, you have to round it up to 2 meters.
1.828 will not be rounded up to 1.9, but fully rounded up to 2. It will be easier for the seller to measure and cut the fabric.
Points to Consider When Buying Fabric
There are some points to consider when buying fabric. Keep those points in mind before the seller cut the fabric. Those points are:
- The type of fabric. Sometimes, the fabric is stretch material, so don’t pull it. Simply measure it as usual, so that you will not be short of a length.
- Purpose of that fabric. If you want to make curtains, usually the length is double. Because curtains’ design is usually not straight but wavy or pleated.
- Width of the fabric. Different fabrics have different widths. When making a pattern on the fabric to sew, the width can make a difference in your total need.
- Add the need for details, embellishment, and seam when taking measurements. Because it may need some extra fabric.
- It is advisable to copy or draw the pattern beforehand. That way, you can measure the length of fabric you’ll need.
- Measurement is usually made by the length in round numbers. Not in decimal. For safety purposes, always round it up. Do not round down your measurement. To avoid shortages.
What Can You Make Out of a Yard of Fabric?
As a hobby, you can use a yard of fabric to make varieties of objects. Of course, to make it neater, you’ll have to sew the edges, either by hand or by sewing machine. Here are some examples of objects you can make out of a yard of fabric:
- A tote bag.
- Pouches with zipper.
- Scrunchies and headbands.
- Pillows, either decorative or sleeping pillows.
- Baby clothes and accessories.
- Napkins and placemats.
- Short apron.
- Mini skirt.
- Short-pants.
- Tops, such as crop tops or tank tops.
To measure how much fabric in a yard is not hard. Just measure 36 inches or 1.094 cm in length. This will be the measurement you need when buying fabric. You can multiply that number as needed, depending on the purpose of the fabric. Just remember to round it up to avoid shortages.
